Who’s Who in East Asian Numismatics?

The online newsletter Coins Weekly runs a regular feature “Who’s Who in Numismatics”, introducing people who are active in the field. So far, in terms of people working on East Asian numismatics, they have featured Joe Cribb and last week the spotlight was on François Thierry de Crussol. I hope they’ll also go further afield and feature some of the numismatists based in East Asia too. (BTW, subscription to Coins Weekly is free)

Where can we find information about people working in East Asian numismatics, now and in the past? Here are some of the things I’ve done so far:

I’m not the only one interested in the history of East Asian numismatics and in the history of collections of East Asian money. See, for example:

As always, suggestions are welcome! Leave a comment below, or email me.

  1. Regarding Who’s Who in East Asian Numismatics, I have been collecting biographical information on collectors, past and present, for decades. Some of this information has been published in Journal of East Asian Numismatics (JEAN) and some in various Champion Hong Kong Auctions catalogs. I was also one of the compilers of the book: Howard Franklin Bowker: Numismatic Pioneer (2014). The book is somewhat rare, but it is being serialized in JEAN. We have added more photos of the ships he served on in the JEAN biography. — Bruce W. Smith

    1. Thanks, Bruce. I’ve added JEAN to the post. I’m trying to give weblinks when I post information, so that readers can take a step further, if they wish. It’s good to see H.F. Bowker getting more attention.
